The shop is sometimes a a place where great and idiosyncratic musical minds meet. We encourage such collaborations. Here are three videos shot recently in the shop. Firstly Muhammad plays kora and Gerry joins in on fiddle. Muhammad came in to get a new pickup fitted on his kora (a twinhead K&K if you’re interested) and tried it out through a Tanglewood acoustic amp. A little bit more tweaking and it sounded great. Gerry couldn’t resist picking up a fiddle.
The next two videos are from a recent guitar and stout tasting night at the shop. The task was to pick 5 guitars and 3 stouts in a blindfold test. Only one person, the extremely finely tuned Richard Atkinson, got all 8 items correct. We had some esteemed guitar makers in attendance including the previously mentioned Mr Atkinson, John McGrath, Jack Spira, Derek Chan and David Chin, Richard Thomas provided cheeses and Max Allen was stout master. Casa Iberica provided snacks.
And finally John from Eritrea came into the shop looking for strings for the harp he was making. We eventually got it sorted and he came back in to play the finished product for us.
