Archtop guitars deliver good projection in the mid-range tones. A desirable quality to many early jazz musicians who, at the time, were often unamplified. This design later evolved into the semi acoustic electrics we see today.
The archtop design was the first guitar modelled with a carved front and back. Further refinements came in the form of F-holes, instead of the traditional round or oval sound holes. Together, these features were taken from the violin-making traditions that dated way back to the Cremona masters from Italy.
