More details about Eastman MD515-V Mandolin
The Eastman MD515-V Mandolin is an excellent example of Eastman’s commitment to creating a vintage style instrument. Violin makers have been “distressing” their fiddles for a long time and now it has now become a fashion with other instruments namely electric guitar who have started making replica models, so this is nothing new.
The MD515/V has beautiful ‘aged’ patina, along with a hand rubbed varnish which avoids the gloss shine that new instruments have. As a result, the varnish is much thinner than with modern gloss, which in turn does allow the mandolin to ‘breathe’ more freely. When this type of work is performed with experience, as is the case with the 515, the result is impressive. It gives the mandolin a warmer tone even before it gets ‘played in’.
