It is not often you find a Vihuela from Mexico available in Australia but this one has made the trip.
It is in good condition and comes with the original case that has protected it well over the years but we can’t say how old it is.
It is sometimes the case with this style of folk instrument that there is no branding or label, it may have fallen out but whoever made it was a good craftsman. The hand done inlay work and rope binding is impressive which takes knowledge and expertise to achieve.
A Vihuela has 5 nylon strings which are tightly tuned and gives this small instrument a great deal of volume when played hard and that makes it the heart and soul of any traditionl Marichi line-up.
Tuned A-D-G-B-E with the A-D-G being one octave above a guitar which is why a Vihuela has a very punchy sound much louder than a regular 6 string classical guitar.
